The Story of the Witch
For many years the house was the property of a connection of the family whose wide, an eccentric woman, was known as Witch Morse. When her husband died, she was obliged to sell the property and its was purchased by Simeon Chase, son of Simeon Sr.
Family tradition told by Mrs. Elizabeth Evelyn Baily Cole’s aunt, that the house was formerly occupied by Witch “Norse” or “Morse” or “Mose”. When the house was sold to Simeon Chase, she was obliged to move, and she cursed Simeon, his children, and his children’s children and prophesied that his children should never prosper. (Rebecca Ingersoll Davis’ Gleaning from Merrimac Valley, Sheaf 2, p 44).
Simeon was Mrs. Charles Cole’s grandfather.
At Simeon Jr.’s Death (1870/75), his son Augustus S. Chase, a civil war veteran (19th Regiment of Massachusetts Infantry) (60) who lost his arm in the service, had the place and lived there with his family. At his death, his widow (Maria) continued to occupy the place for several years but when it was sold, she moved to the city where she died (1849). (7)
