Eight Estabrooks (Esterbrook(s)/Easterbrook(s)) were part of the history of Rocks Village. Although Estabrooks families were well established in nearby towns such as Andover and Boxford, the Estabrooks of Rocks Village began with the widow of Elijah Estabrooks, Hannah (Daniels) Estabrook, who married a shipwright named Joseph Burrill in 1743. They lived at first in Newbury and then moved to Rocks Village.
Joseph Burrill was born in 1702 in Newbury. He owned a property in the village at 15 River Road to the north side of the brook. He also owned land on Wharf Lane. Samuel Estabrook, Hannah’s son by her first husband Elijah, was an apprentice to his stepfather and eventually became a shipwright himself and settled in Rocks Village also on River Rd. Several generations of Estabrooks went on to settle in the village in the ensuing years, descended from Samuel, who kept his father’s name.
Samuel Estabrooks (1738 -1798) married Sarah Robinson (xxx – xxx) in 1762. He was in the military service March 1757, was on the muster roll of the Third Foot Company of East Haverhill, and enlisted to attempt a conquest on Canada. He was known as Lt. Samuel.
Samuel and Sarah had several children but only Samuel II, a cooper, settled in the village on River Rd. with his wife Hannah Silloway. Samuel and Hannah’s offspring included Samuel III, a bricklayer, Joseph, a carpenter, and Abigail, all of whom settled in the village . Joseph’s sons Joseph Jr. and John R. married and settled in the village on both sides of E. Main St. Abigail married David Elliott, a village landowner. When David died, she raised her children in a house at approximately 20 E. Main St. next door to the store and shoe factory that her sons George and Samuel established and ran. See Elliott page. In 1850, counting Abigail Estabrooks Elliott, there were no less than seven Estabrooks households residing in the village.
Number 20 Wharf Lane is often called the Samuel Estabrook house, but no evidence has been uncovered to connect the property to any of the Samuel Estabrooks. It is possible that Samuel Estabrooks III, the mason, participated in building the chimney for that house. There is documented evidence that he helped build the chimney at 1 Wharf Lane for Zebulon Ingersoll in 1814 when the second half of that house was constructed [John Ingersoll diary].
GENEALOGY
To distinguish the generations here, the Samuels and Josephs are designated by number, e.g. Samuel I, Samuel II, etc. There is no evidence that they were called so while living.

Hannah Daniels Estabrooks and Joseph Burrill were married on February 9, 1743/44. Hannah must have brought to her marriage with Joseph Burrill her 8 children from her marriage to Elijah Estabrooks, ages 3 (Aaron) to 18 (Mary). She then had 3 more children with Joseph Burrill. Hannah and Joseph apparently lived in Newbury at least until the end of 1747 when their last child John was born. It is unknown when they moved to Rocks Village but it’s likely they were there by 1750 [Phineas Nichols statement]. They sold their two houses on River Rd (#7 and #15) to son Samuel Estabrooks in 1761.
