The Thomas Chase line includes several members connected to Rocks Village in the early 1800’s. Nathan Chase (Josiah, Nathan, Nathan, Thomas) owned 23 E. Main St. in 1827, and his sister Lydia who married Ephraim Colby lived in the western half of that house soon thereafter. Ephraim Colby, described in a deed as a man of “excessive drinking and idleness”, was forced to accept a guardian who sold off some of Ephraim’s lands to cover his debts. Ruth Chase, sister of Nathan and Lydia, married David Chase, a descendant of Aquila Chase through a different branch, who also degenerated into a drunkard and died in poverty. Another sister, Lois, married Isaac Watts Merrill, author of a diary that still exists today which describes life in and around the village including accounts of his various drunken brothers in-law. Isaac and Lois lived on Corliss Hill Road. There is a memorial to Isaac Watts Merrill at Winnekenni Park in Haverhill.
The father of Nathan, Lydia, Ruth, Lois, and seven more children was Josiah Chase (1757-1826) who lived with his wife Ruth on a large farm on Corliss Hill. Josiah is reputedly the relative who the witch lived with when she was forced to sell her house and leave the village (see Witch page).
Lydia Dustin Chase (Moses, Nathaniel, Ezra, James, Thomas) married Timothy Flanders in 1826. Timothy, a shoe cutter and combmaker, was involved in several real estate purchases in and around the village in consort with Stephen Morse and Benjamin Chase, including land on Wharf Lane. Lydia and Timothy lived in Haverhill for many years according to census data. They lived on River Rd. in the 1840 census, but in other censuses before and after, they lived elsewhere in Haverhill. In 1850 Timothy is a shoe cutter along with many of his sons, but he is called a comb maker when he dies in 1852.
Thomas Chase, son of Aquila, married (1) Rebecca Follinsby, daughter of Thomas and Mary Bradford Follinsby, on 22 Nov 1677 in Newbury. Rebecca is the sister of Ann Follansby/Follansbee, wife of Moses Chase, another son of Aquila and Thomas’ brother.

Chase boarded previous to going to Detroit. Haverhill, Mass., Oct. 28, ae. 66. She was the wife of the late Samuel A. Chase, of Haverhill, and daughter of the late David Gile, of Hopkinton, N.H. Bereft by death, at the early age of 11 years, of a beloved and excellent mother, Mrs. C. was deprived of the priceless blessing of maternal influence and love, and, many of the endearments of home; yet, by her native force of character and strength of intellect, she acquired a position in the respect and veneration of those who knew her, of which the best cultivated mind might well be proud. Her early afflictions, together with her natural thoughtfulness, gave to her manners an aspect of unusual seriousness and solemnity, and it would be difficult to point to a single occasion in which she indulged in a trifling act, or turned aside, for the sake of pleasure, from the rugged path of duty. In woman’s true sphere, the education of her family, she employed the highest energies of her strong mind and the best affections of her fond and earnest heart. Two of her sons secured a liberal education at Dartmouth College – C.C. Chase, principal of the High School, Lowell, and Leverett Mr. Chase, principal of the Adams School, Dorchester, Mass.; three of them are now principals of high and grammar schools in Mass., and all her eight surviving children have been, at some time, employed in the business of teaching. For more than twenty years, Mrs. C. has been a consistent member of the Baptist church in East Haverhill.
