Cooper Family

The little house on Wharf Lane at number 10 (later called 14) was owned and occupied by the Cooper family for about 100 years, starting in 1852. Charlotte Cooper married John Johnson Chase, son of Benjamin Chase, a former (died 1831) village landholder and resident. Charlotte and John bought the property including the “cottage dwelling house” located there from John and Ruth Johnson who lived at 1 Wharf Lane. After John Chase died, Charlotte sold the property to her brother George Cooper in 1869, a carpenter, who lived there with his family in the late 1800’s. George passed it on to his son Albert Cooper and his wife Mary who resided there into the 1920’s. At that point it was sold to Albert’s daughter Ida Cooper Smith who was to become the last occupant of the house. The house burned down in 1958.

Ida’s son Frank Albert Smith purchased 27 River Rd., the Toll Keeper’s house, in 1917. He sold it to his son Frank Smith Jr., known as “Red” Smith, in 1946. It stayed in the same Smith family until the present day.

Some of the Cooper descendants (Frank A. Smith) were involved with other nearby properties on Wharf Lane through marriages to members of the Colby-Follette family since Frank Smith had married Franc Follette.
