Copp Family

William  Copp came from England with his second wife Judith and settled in Boston in about 1635. Copp’s Hill in Boston is named after a member of this family. The branch of the family that settled in Haverhill included Simeon Copp who lived in Rocks Village. Simeon Copp bought the house at 23 E Main St. in 1798. A Moses and Mary Copps sold property on River Road in 1805, but it is not clear whether Moses and Mary are in the same family or not.

The Copp Family came to Haverhill from the Plaistow, NH area.

David Copp born March 9, 1703-4 in Haverhill, MA. He married October 27, 1725  Amesbury Anne Tucker of Salisbury, MA. They lived near the east shore of Washington Pond, in Hampstead, NH. Hannah was admitted to the Hampstead church August 6, 1752, and died at Hampstead aged eighty five years. David was a tithing man thee, and in 175 the minister writes of teaching his children the catechism. David signed petitions in 1744 and 1748.

David and Anne had Aaron in 1729 Amesbury, 1726 Joseph, 1727 Ebenezer, 1735 Mary, Fawn 1729, Elizabeth 1732, Anna 1737, Mehitabel 1740 . He married Hannah Merrill 15 Dec 1746 Hampstead NH. They had Anna 1748 (Anna dies at the poorhouse, July 3, 1833.), Abiah(male) 1749. Abiah had:

Moses Copp (March 31, 1706 Haverhill, MA d 1756. married Mehitable Griffing b 1710  ??Emerson(1702 – xxx) on 17 Jul 1732 in Haverhill. When Moses died, Mehitable went on to marry Peter Griffin and have 3 more children. Moses had, born in Haverhill:

Moses sold land in Haverhill to Joshua Page and Edward Ordway (75/104) in 1737 ) 40 acres that he bought from Ephraim Roberts (61/212)

Jonathan Copp born October 7, 1699 and died April 7, 1762 Essex, Haverhill, MA. Married Esther Elizabeth Dow born May 27, 1709 daughter of Henry and Elizabeh (Colby) Dow. Esther died February 1786. They had Solomon, Tristam 1725 b Dover NH m Martha Horne,  Samuel b 1742 d 1816 an early settler of Lebanon NH.

Josiah Copp born 3 Jan 1700/02 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts (Listed on Tax records in 1742) Josiah died 1792 Gilmantown, Strafford, New Hampshire, m. May 26, 1731 Mary Swett  b: 24 Sep 1702 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, to John Swett and Susannah Page. She was sister of John Swett III b. 1699 who owned most of the land in RV in the mid 1700’s. Both John Swetts, father and son, operated the ferry there. Mary died 1744.

  4. Moses COPP b: 12 Apr 1738 in Haverhill.

  1. Simeon Copp born February 24,1743 Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts and died July 18, 1812 Gilmanton, Strafford, NH. He married Sarah Fellows born 1750 and died 1824. (doesn’t fit with second wife: married (1798) a Mary Wadleigh b 1770 (d of Joseph and Abigail (Bailey) of West Newbury.).
