Burleigh #35. Ebenezer m. June 6, 1731/2, Lydia Johnson. Her father and mother were both killed by the French and Indians at the attack on Haverhill, Aug. 29, 1708. When the mother was slain, she held in her arms her only child Lydia, a year and 6 days old, born in the second year of her marriage. The child strangely escaped the tomahawk, concealed perhaps in the folds of her dress, grew to womanhood, and in her twenty fifth year married Ebenezer Gile. He moved from Haverhill to Hampstead in 1740; thence to Henniker in 1765; thence to Hopkinton, N.H. where he died about 1775. His widow died at Enfield in 1781. In 1743, he signed a petition to be set off from Kingston to Hampstead. He was a large speculator in lands, and in deeds is called a “trader”.”

History of Henniker “During this year (1766) came the three brothers, Ebenezer, Noah and Joshua Gile, from Marlborough, Mass. and settled in the southeast part of the township….The following were residents of the town at the time of its incorporation, with their families…Ebenezer Gile, Joshua Gile…The first meeting of the inhabitants of the town after its incorporation was held November 25, 1768, and Silas Barnes was chosen clerk, and Ebenezer Gile, William Presbury and Jonas Bowman selectmen. The first annual meeting in the town was held March 6, 1769, when Amos Gould was chosen clerk, and Ebenezer Gile, Eliakim Howe and Ebenezer Harthorn selectmen.”

Memorial History of Hampstead, NH (Cong. Ch.), Noyes, (1903) p. 316 – “Lydia Johnson, b. in Haverhill, Mass., 1707; a daughter of Thomas and Ruth (Bradley) Johnson, a grandson of John and Elizabeth (Maverick) Johnson. Mirick’s History of Haverhill says: “Ruth, wife of Thomas Johnson, was killed by the Indians in 1708, with both of the grandparents of Mr. Johnson, and that the oldest daughter, Lydia, b. 1707, was in her mother’s arms when she was slain, a year and six months old. The child strangely escaped the tomahawk, (concealed perhaps in the folds of her dress), grew to womanhood, and in the 25th year of her age, married Ebenezer Gile. She was admitted to the church from the First Church in Haverhill, June 3, 1752. They had children, the first five b. in Haverhill, the others in Hampstead.” And lists 9 ch.

JOHNSON GILE came to Enfield, with his wife and two children, in 1779, and settled upon the farm where his great-grandson, L. Hazen Gile, now lives. He was the father of six children--four sons and two daughters. His sons, Thomas, Daniel, Samuel and Ebenezer, all settled near him.
