Deacon Francis Swan’s father Joshua was brother of Timothy, Richard, and John Swan, all sons of Robert Swan of Andover and as of 1650, Haverhill (later became Methuen). Robert is buried in Pentucket cemetery. He married Elizabeth Acie and Hannah Russ. https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=18014039

Robert’s father Richard was a founder of Rowley and is buried in Rowley. He was married to Ann Hopkinson whose stepson John Trumbull married Deborah Jackson, whose sister Elizabeth Jackson Howe was accused, convicted and hanged as a witch at Salem. (source of genealogy: Cynthia Swan). Salem witch trials are well documented in multiple places including https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Howe

Timothy Swan, Francis Swan’s uncle, was thought to have been the father of Elizabeth Emerson’s first illegitimate daughter, Dorothy Emerson in 1686. Elizabeth later had two illegitimate male twins with Samuel Ladd in 1691. Elizabeth’s twins were found dead by the Church ladies, unclear if she killed them or if they were stillborn.  She was convicted of infanticide and hanged in 1693. Elizabeth Emerson was the sister of the famous Hannah Emerson Dustin, who was captured by the Indians, then with two other captives, scalped ten of the Indians and escaped.  The Emerson family was asked to move away from Methuen because they were very disruptive.  Elizabeth’s father used to beat her severely. (according to Sharon Pollard and this ).

This Timothy Swan is both an accuser and an “afflicted” in the Salem witch trials. He was involved in 18 separate cases. He died at the age of 30. His brothers Richard and John were also involved (source: Cynthia Swan documents).  See also .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Dane

Swan Cemetery in New Sharon Maine

NOTE:  This cemetery was transcribed in the early 1960’s by Dorothy Wirth.  Her records are in the Farmington Public Library; by comparing what I found in April 2005 to what Mrs. Wirth found in the 1960’s, I was able to provide the following information.  Note to DW refer the Mrs. Wirth’s dates found. Her narrative on the page said she had spoken with Mrs. Allen, a neighbor to the cemetery and Mrs. Allen told her the Swans were Quakers from Philadelphia.
