Morse Family’s | Rocks Village in Haverhill, Massachusetts

The Morse family that is descended from Anthony Morse born in 1606/7 in Marlborough, England, contains two branches of interest to the history of Rocks Village. The first branch is descended from Anthony’s son Benjamin who was born in Newbury in 1640 after his parents immigrated in 1635. The second branch is descended from Anthony’s grandson Anthony and his son John, who also lived in Newbury. Later generations of the Benjamin branch included William Morse and his son Henry and grandson Oliver, all of whom owned farms just up the hill from the village in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Some of their descendants (Rachel 1804- 1841, Horace, Amos) settled in the village proper in the mid-1800’s. Horace and his family lived at 34 E Main St and 15 Wharf Lane. Rachel married Rufus Knowles, and they also lived on Wharf Lane. The Anthony-John branch includes members such as Amos, Dean, Joseph, and Lydia Morse who lived in the village at various times throughout the 1800’s.

Anthony was a shoemaker who arrived on the ship James in 1635, his unmarried younger brother William apparently accompanying him. Anthony’s wife Ann Cox and their five children who had been born in England immigrated at about the same time period, but likely on a later voyage since their son Richard was born in December of 1635, several months after Anthony and William arrived. Although his father, also named Anthony, had already died (1620/1), most sources say Anthony and William’s mother Christian Elizabeth Bailey Morse died later in Newbury or Haverhill, so perhaps she traveled over with his wife Ann. The James was almost wrecked off the coast of Hampton, NH during a storm, but finally made it to Boston harbor (see Ayer family page). William, also a shoemaker, born in England in 1614, married Elizabeth Titcomb and settled in Newbury in what is now downtown Newburyport. Elizabeth was tried, convicted, and imprisoned for witchcraft in about 1679, but she was finally released. William and Elizabeth are both buried in Bangor, ME.

The house owned by Oliver Morse (Henry, William, William, Benjamin, Anthony 1606) is still standing across from Greenwood cemetery on E. Broadway. It is known as the Hastings-Morse house, see Wikipedia.

There was intermarriage within the same branch of the Morses and between the two branches. Many of the Morses also married Chases, another common family around the village. Both the Benjamin branch and a third branch descended from Anthony‘s son Joshua intermarried with the Ordways, another old family of Rocks Village. One member of the Anthony-John branch was Daniel Morse who lived in Newbury, but several of his offspring ended up settling in the village in the 1800’s. Among them was Amos Morse (1786-1861) who married Lucretia Deane and had a son named Dean Morse (1820-1872). Dean lived on Wharf Lane and left his property to his daughter Mary who married Samuel Colby. Mary and Samuel continued to live there until late into the 1800’s. A notorious member of this branch is Joseph Morse who died under mysterious circumstances on the bridge in 1831 while working as the bridge tender. Another member is his sister Lydia Morse who married James Davis, a descendant of one of the founders of Haverhill of the same name. Although James and Lydia lived briefly on Wharf Lane, they settled down on the Davis family farm on Merrimack St. where one of the original buildings still stands.

There are legends of a woman known as a witch called “Aunt Morse” or “Aunt Moss” living in or near the village in the early to mid 1800’s, including stories penned by John Greenleaf Whittier [94] p 14 and 50. If she really existed and was part of either of these Morse families, we have not been able to pinpoint her. One of the legends says that she was the aunt of Aaron Chase, a childhood classmate of Whittier’s, and was married to a Moses Chase. The person matching that description, however, is not named Morse but is named Sarah Flanders Chase. See Chase (Moses) and Witches page.

Many of the Morses are buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

MORSE, William was born 1553, England; died 1578, Swindon, Wiltshire, England. Son Anthony would have just been born at the time of his father’s death and thus was the youngest. See William’s probate below. Anthony did not appear to inherit any property.

William married BARNARD, Mary Elizabeth 1570, England at age 17. Mary was born 1551, England, so she was 19 when they married. They had 6 or 7 children including:

Anthony married BELLSIRE (BAILEY), Christian 1605. Christian was born 1580/1590, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England; died 7 Apr 1668, Newbury or Haverhill, Massachusetts. They had five children all born in England, the last in 1621. Since children Nicholas, Phillip and Elinor died in England, we can assume that only Anthony and William emigrated to the new world. Son Anthony who had been born in 1606/7 is considered the immigrant ancestor for our purposes:

MORSE, Anthony Lieut. (6.Anthony William², 1.William¹) was born 9 May 1606, Hampton, England; was christened 9 May 1606, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England; died 12 Oct 1686, Newbury, Massachusetts; was buried First Parish Burying Ground, Newbury, Massachusetts. He is referred to here as the immigrant ancestor or as Anthony 1606. or Lt. Anthony.

Anthony settled in Newbury, Massachusetts in 1635. He built a house about a half mile south of the old cemetery in what is now called Newbury old town. He is listed, along with a William Morse on the ship “James” passenger roster as being a shoemaker. See Ayer family page for information on the voyage of the James.

Anthony married COX, Ann Elizabeth 2 May 1629, St. Mary the Virgin, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. Ann (daughter of COX, Ambrose and BEALE, Alice) was born 28 May 1607, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England; died 8 Mar 1679, Newbury, Massachusetts.

Some sources say that Anthony married a Mary Waldo, but most say his wife was only Ann Cox.

He was admitted as a Freeman May 25, 1636. Anthony testified at his sister-in-law Elizabeth’s trial (wife of his brother William who had come over with him) where she was accused of being a witch.

Anthony and Ann Morse had fourteen children. Robert, Anthony III (also Lieut), Esther, Anne (m. Francis Thurlow), and Richard were born between the years 1629 – 1635 in England. Nine more children were born in Newbury 1637-1653: Peter, Benjamin, Sarah, Hannah (m. Thomas Newman), Joseph, Lydia (died young), Mary, Hester, and Joshua. Anthony Morse of Newbury was fined £5 for digging a pit and not filling it up whereby a child drowned. In this pit Thomas Smith was drowned. December 25, 1665, the Selectmen ordered that “Anthory Morse Sr., is to keep the
meetinghouse and ring the bell, see that the house be cleaned, swept, and the
glass of the windows to be carefully look’t unto, if any should happen to be loosened with the wind and be nailed close again”. He was still acting in the office of sexton in 1680 as that year the records show that 10 shillings was added to his former annuity in this service. [24]

Lt. Anthony’s brother William born 12 May 1614 England married Elizabeth Morse (1616 England – 1690 Newbury, Mass. ) known as the Witch of Newbury. [68] volume 1 p. 186 and [24] p. 129 and

There is dispute over the location of William Morse’s house. The Morse Society and others believe that William and Elizabeth lived on four acres located on the corner of LIberty and State Sts. in downtown Newburyport (Newbury at the time). William received the land as a land grant. However, there is also this account:

The “Old Witch House,” of Newbury, Essex Co, Mass, stood at the corner of High and Market Streets, opposite St. Paul’s Church. This house was supposed to have been built about 1634, and was a ” Garrison House? for protection against the Indians. The house that stands on the site was erected in 1851 or 1852, and, in all probability, the old house was torn down in 1850, or early in 1851. At the time of the demolition, Rev. Mr. Washburn, Rector of St. Paul’s Church, gave a description of the house and surroundings in very appropriate lines. It v/as in this house that WILLIAM MORSE (the brother of ANTHONY MORSE) lived with his wife “Elizabeth? and it was in this humble abode that the scenes, as described in the Witchcraft Cases, occurred.[“Memorial of the Family of Morse”, Genealogy p 545.]

Probate #47546 contains several codicils changing beneficiary from his sons to his daughters-in-law. Probate is over 60 pages, valuation over $91,000. Hazen was potentially the president of Haverhill Bank.

Other land holdings to children. Sarah lived to be 100, dying in 1814. Abel Morse (son of Capt. Abel Morse) Probate 18899 1741 Newbury. Died before his father. So his widow Edna asks that father in law Abel be made executor. She signs long statement that seems to sign over her right of dower to Ezekial and Edna, her children. Also asks that father in law be guardian to her two children. Personal estate inventory and debts and credits. No real estate?? John Sweet got 18 shillings OT. Didn’t see any will.

William Morse the elder of Rodbourne Cheney (near Marlborough), yeoman, will dated August 25, 1578 leaves small amounts of money to the poor of Rodbourne Cheney and to Salisbury Cathedral, and leaves other items to his son Anthony who should be taken care of until he reaches 21. Sons Roger and Edmund as well as Thomas Weston and his wife Christian (possibly a daughter?) inherited most of the considerable property. It looks like Rhoda Morse Chase (widow) owns a portion of it in 1888 as she sells it to Lizzie Swayne (deed 1220/539) for $1.00. It states that it was owned by her brother Robert Morse and her sisters Lois Morse and Abigail Morse. Rhoda Morse married Adrian Chase. I think Lizzie is her sister Elizabeth who married William Swain.

The name Morse apparently derives from Hugo de Mors, from the Netherlands, who assisted King Edward III as a military escort in 1358 during the Hundred Years War against the French. After the war the king granted some of these soldiers land in East Anglia, at the time a sparsely populated rural area northeast of London. (Ironically East Anglia is the region many of the Puritans hailed from, but is not the area that the descendants of William Morse came from. They were from Wiltshire County, due west of London.)

There was land held in Badbury(near Marlborough) by Thomas Morse, described as of Badbury Wick, who died seised in 1581 of 183 acres there. His son Richard inherited the land. William Morse’s will of a few years earlier (1578) designates his brother Thomas as one of the supervisors of his estate. So it is possible that Thomas Morse of Badbury Wick was William’s brother. Their father or grandfather could have been William Morse (between 1518 and 1520 William Morse, a free tenant of Badbury manor, had a holding called ‘Blaks’. This is elsewhere described as a 2-virgate estate held by military service, which Thomas Morse his father had bought from William Dayley) or John Morse (between 1518 and 1536 the demesne of the manor was being farmed by John Morse. )

A newspaper account about Frank B. Morse:

The Codman Inn, owned by Frank B Morse was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning. Mr Morse discovered the fire about 2 o’clock it seemingly having its origin under the piazza in the rear of the building.
The fire spread rapidly and enveloped the whole structure in a very few minutes, the occupants having barely time to escape with what clothing they could hastely gather. So fast did the flames spread that not any of the contents of the house were saved.
The alarm was given about town over the telephone and help arrived very quickly, but the night baing still the fire was confined to the house, excepting an auto building near by, which caught from the heat.
So intense was the heat that the Mont Calm Garage building, formerly the old Mont Calm Hotel, on the opposite side of the street, was charred, also the Lorenso Currier residence, occupied by Robert Lawn, on the south side and the large barn belonging to the hotel in the rear, about 100 feet east.
A delegation of fireman from Enfield village, in charge of fire commissioner Ralph Nichols, responded, being taken over in the Currier livery autos and maing the trip of five miles in about eight minutes.
Mr Morse estimates the loss on building and contents at over $5000, with an insurance of about $2000. The fire was first discovered breaking out under the piazza in the basement. No fires had been made in the cellar since May and the only theory in which it could otiginate is that it was either incendiary ot caused by someone smoking who might have gone into the basement. A lot of oil barrels were stored in the basement and this seems to account for the fire soreading so rapidly. This is the second time this hotel has been destroyed by fire, it being burned about seven years ago, including a large barn and the set of buildings on the north side.
Mr Morse is very unfortunate in sustaining loss by fires having also lost his saw mill a few years ago.

Re: William Morse owning a slave:

Slavery was effectively made illegal when the Mass. constitution was passed in 1780, e.g. Article 1 states “All men are born free and equal”. (Later “men” was changed to “people”). What happened next was that several cases came before the courts in Mass., brought by slaves to win their freedom based on the constitution, in ensuing years. The slaves won and often the masters were found guilty and fined. In fact the landmark case was brought by a woman named Bett (Elizabeth Freeman) in Great Barrington.

Oliver Morse owned the Hastings/Morse House:

House/land (or part of it) was owned by Oliver Morse in the mid 1800’s. Oliver was the son of Henry Morse who was the first generation of this Morse family to be born in Haverhill. Henry’s parents were William and Judith (Hale) Morse from Newbury. I believe that Oliver got the land/house from Henry.
Henry got part of it from Mary Young (wife Benaiah Young) deed (161/25) who’s daughter Molly, I believe married Henry’s brother William. (not sure about that part). Benaiah Young got it from Robert Hastings deed (131/33) in 1772.

Testimony of Zechariah Davis against Elizabeth Morse [24] p. 129

Zechariah Davis thus testifies verbatim and literatim. “When I lived at Salisbury, William Morses’ wife asked of me whether I could let her have a small passell of winges and I told her I woode, so she would have me bring them over for her the next time I came over, but I came over and did not think of the winges, but met goody Morse, she asked me whether I had brought over her winges and I tel her no I did not thinke of it, so I came 3 ore 4 times and had them in my minde a litel before I came over but stil forget them at my coming away so meting with her every time that I came over without them aftar I had promised her the winges, soe she tel me she wonder at it that my memory should be soe bad, but when I came home I went to the barne and there was 3 cafes in a pen. One of them fel a danceing and roreing and was in such a condition as I never saw on cafe in before, but being almost night the cattle came home and we put him to his dam and he sucke and was well 3 or 4 dayes, and on of them was my brothers then come over to Nubery, but we did not thinke to send the winges, but when he came home and went to the barne this cafe fel a danceing and roreing so wee put him to the cowe, but he would not sucke but rane a roreinge away soe wee gate him againe with much adoe and put him into the barne and we heard him roer severall times in the night and in the morning I went to the barne and there he was seting upon his taile like a doge, and I never see no cafe set aftar that manner before and so he remained in these fits while he died.” Taken on oath June seventh, 1679.
