George Family

The George family was active in the Rocks Village area and surrounding farm land.

Gideon (1712 – 1787) and Elizabeth Jewett owned 134 acres in Haverhill when Gideon died in 1787. His son Amos purchased 1/2 of the land at that time. Gideon George does business with Joseph Burrill in 1764(56)  The first deed listed for Gideon is dated 1749 and he buys land from Abraham Kimball (93/58)

Major Amos George (1754 – 1827) marries into Rocks Village when he marries his second wife, Sarah Nichols. Sarah is the Daughter of Phineas Nichols of River Road and Anne Saunders. Amos was one of the charter members of the Rock’s Village Church, and at his home Jan. 1, 1822, the delegates from sister churches met to form the new organization.  (smith) Captain Amos George buys items from Zebulon Ingersoll in 1793/4 1802 – 1804: Major Amos George is listed as selectman in Municipal Register (45 pg 227)

Sally George (1817 – 1856) (Amos/Sarah Nichols, Gideon, John). Marries Samuel Dana Maynard (1811 – 1889. They owned the Sawyer Store at 42 East Main Street from 1853 -1857.

Sally (1782 – 1802 or 1809) (Amos/Sarah Green, Gideon, John) marries Enoch Foot in 1802. Enoch Foot owned the Brick Store from 1815 to 1850 when he dies. The brick store was across the street from the Sawyer Store.

Moses D. (1795 – 1851) (Amos, Gideon, John) marries Abigail Bodwell Ladd (1794- 1868). She is the daughter of Nathanial Ladd and Sarah Noyes. Moses and Abigail own 803 East Broadway from 1817 to 1868.  Abigail sells off portions after Moses dies and then some is inherited by her children when she dies.  Abigail buys 1/2 of 34 East Main in 1847 and in 1850 they whole family appear to be living there. Abigail sells it in 1867 a year before she dies.

Abigail Green George (1797 – 1860) (Amos, Gideon, John) marries Edward S. Moody (Cutting’s Brother) (1783 – 1864) in 21 Apr 1815.  Their daughter, Mary Sargent Moody (1822 – 1850), marries John L. Orne (1818 – ) in 1847. Mary and John live at 34 East Main Street from 1839 to 1847 when they sell it to Abigail B. L. George, wife of Moses.  Mary’s aunt.

Sophia (Lewis, Samuel, John, John) marries Samuel Esterbrook in 1820.

William (William, William, William, John) moves to New Sharon Maine 1804 around the same time that Francis Swan and Abigail Elliot move there.


  1. John George (1661 – 28 Feb 1718) marries Ann Swaddock (1678 – Feb. 7, 1763) in 1698 in England. Printers Kingman AZ p. 315 that John and Annie lived with John Swaddock, Ann’s Uncle, a Haverhill settler since the 1660s. Probate: 10731 dated 1716. He had land near Little River. He drowned while crossing the Merrimack River on the ice.

He could potentially be the William George who buys a 2/3 of 19 Wharf lane in 1821 and sells it in 1824. In 1827, He receives land from his father 5 acres adjoining Gideon and 1/2 of remaining of home farm, swan meadow containing 5 acres. (no kids recorded in Haverhill). At age 60 living Georgetown in 1850 with Hannah, Amos, and Charlotte. According to John Ingersoll’s log from 1814, William worked for John on his new (half) house being built at 1 Wharf Ln.

        9. Gideon (5 Mar 1780 – Mar. 9, 1849, a. 68 y. 6 m. 2 d.) marries Nancy Chase (x-1684) (d. Anthony and Sarah Swett Chase) 21 Dec 1804. Built on the same side of the street near the hill, using a one-story house with a gambrel roof, that stood nearer the road, for the L to his two story house, now the home of the Misses Caroline F. and Mary W. George (in 1899) (26). This was on Jamaica path.  Probate 40111 dated 1849. Nancy – widow states there are 7 children all of age. Frederick as son (1850). Nancy’s probate 40121 dated 1864.
