Ordway Family

The earliest connection is when James Ordway marries first Anne Emery  in 1648 in Newbury MA., and second, Mrs. Joanna (Davis) Corliss in 1687.  This was not in the village, rather ancestors whose descendants ended up in the Village.

The 2nd earliest connection with the Village is when Rachel Ordway marries Thomas Johnson, the grandfather of Col John Johnson who owns the Tavern 1803 – ~1830.

1769: Mark Woodman marries Sarah Morse who is the daughter of Caleb Morse (Anthony, Joshua, Anthony 1607) and Sarah Ordway ( James, James, James 1621)

Rev Nehemiah Ordway is listed in land deals in 1782 with lots of other people related to Phineas Nichols land.

It isn’t until much later that the Ordways actually own property and live and work in the village.

Warren Moody Ordway (David Jr., David, Nathaniel, Hananiah, James/Anne Emery, Edward) marries Caroline Greenleaf Foot (Enoch Foot/Dolly Ingersoll) in 1834. In 1850, they inherit 1/3 of 9 Wharf Lane from Enoch Foot.  Caroline’s other siblings, George and Abigail, get the other 2/3.  In 1857, they all sell their parts to Eben Colby and his wife Caroline E. (Garland) Colby. They appear to have settled in Bradford as all their children are born there and Caroline gives the Library money to establish a Bradford Branch in 1881.

It was around 1870 when this quartet of commercial fishermen were photographed after hauling their catch of shad and a single sturgeon out of the Merrimack River in Rocks Village. From left are Benjamin Brown, Charles Ordway, who owned the fishing rights for the area, Albert Cooper and Ordway. (The Haverhill Mass, Gazette, Saturday May 13, 1989, pg 11)

Theodore Ordway (1799 – 1881) (yet to determine lineage)(born in West Newbury) marries Mary Carr Elliott (Ephriam/Mehitable (Haseltine) in 1828.  Their daughters, Elizabeth and Francis, marry into the Davis Family.

Theodore Ordway was tollkeeper in 1858 and shoemaker. He took the last receipts collected. Later his son Charles Ordway took over shoemaking and tending the draw.

Moses Little who ends up marrying Dolly Foot lives with Theodore in 1850 Census. They are living between Nancy George and Hazen Kimball which suggests outside the village.

Hazon E. Ordway and Charles E. Ordway (sons of Theodore and Mary C.) are listed in the Protector 3 company of the HTH in mid 1800s

1883, Apr 13: Samuel T. Ordway (1851 – xx) (s. of William Ordway and Mary T. Gilman and sister of Mary who marries Thomas Quested) marries Mary A. M. Banks (daughter of William Banks and Catherine Banks??) lives at 20 East Main Street from 1889 to 1903.

1887, May 26: Samuel Elliott (widower) to Mary A. M. Ordway (1198/136) $50.00 and taxes for 1887. Road on south, Young on east, John Johnson Jr. on North and Emond on west..  This may be 24 East Main or the Shoe Factory.

A William Ordway drowned near Newburyport on September 5, 1814, according to John Ingersoll’s diary.

Further afield in East Parish, the Ordways married into the Chase, Morse, George, Bradley, Woodman, Copp, Eaton, and Emery families.

This Ordway line goes back to Bengeworth, England, and as far as we can trace it to Robert Ordway 1460-1536. His son was William ( 1491-1537) whose son was Robert (1520-1580). Roberts’ son was Thomas, (1554-1604), and Thomas’s son was Edward. [Geni]
