At least three sons of John Davis/Davys (1560-1626) and Agnes of Acton Turville England settled in Haverhill, MA: James: 1583/85 England – 1679 Haverhill, MA, Thomas: 1603 England- 1683 Haverhill, MA, and John b 1621 m Jane Peaslee in 1646 in Haverhill and died 1675 Newbury. Their other sons were Samuel (1640 Haverhill), and Ephraim (1641 Haverhill) and daughters Katherine Mills, Alice, Agnes, and Sarah Clark (1643 Haverhill).

James Davis Sr. b 1583 and his brother Thomas Davis b 1603, both born in England, were original settlers of Haverhill. James is a listed member of the group of original settlers of Haverhill led by Rev. John Ward, and Thomas was one of the signatories to the deed for the acquisition of land from the Indians. Haverhill is named after Ward’s home town of Haverhill, England. James and Thomas Davis were among the first five selectmen of the town, chosen in 1646. James Sr. and James Jr. were each awarded 20 acres of ”accommodation” land at that time. In 1649 they were granted part of sour-meadow [38]. In 1652 when the second division of “plough-land” was laid out by the town of Haverhill, James Davis Sr received 10 acres, James Davis Jr 10 acres, John Davis, another brother also born in England before 1621, 6 acres and Thomas Davis 8 acres. In 1721 lots in the fifth division were drawn [32] and representatives (heirs) of James Sr and James Jr received shares.
The family holdings consisted of at least ninety acres at one point (deed 1393/211, in 1893). The Davis family farm, still intact, if smaller in size, remains to this day on Merrimac St. in the upper village, near the Merrimac line. Apparently the holdings originally crossed over into modern day Merrimac and extended to the other side of Merrimac St. (now a development) (1881 map). One barn building from the old farm is extant, although the farmhouse and other buildings are newer. An 1832 map shows the owner of the farm as T. Davis. 1872 just Davis and J. D. across the street, J. Davis at same intersection by firehouse.
The farm seems to have passed down to another James who is not descended from James Jr. but rather from his brother Samuel. This James Davis, born in 1798 is (Amos, Ephraim, Samuel, James Sr) and his sister Hannah did inherit land from their father Amos Davis (probate 7270). James was a deacon of the church and lived to be 86. He lived at the farm with his second wife Lydia (Morse) whom he married in 1825, for most of their long lives (Lydia died at the age of 92). James and Lydia also may have lived briefly on Wharf Lane as they sold half of 15 Wharf to Benjamin Chase in 1830. Their daughter, Rebecca Ingersoll Davis, is the author of Gleanings of the Merrimack Valley, date. She was apparently named after James’ first wife, Rebecca Ingersoll Jenness, daughter of Zebulon and Ruth Ingersoll who lived on River Road and Wharf Lane for many years.
Lydia Davis’s brother Joseph Morse died on the bridge in mysterious circumstances. Her brother Stephen was involved in several land deals in and around the village (see http://www.rocksvillage.org/families/morse-family/).
A three acre property, now at the address of 99 Old Amesbury Line Rd., was bought by James Davis in 1850 from Samuel Maynard. Part of the land including a house was sold to Wallace George (b. 1827 son of Moses George and Abigail Bodwell Ladd) in 1852 (482/270). The ell of the current house at that address is likely to be half of the Swett tavern located originally on E. Main St. that was split in two in about 1852, the other half becoming the Osgood house on River Road [The Peaslees and Others of Haverhill and Vicinity by E. A. But James Davis seems to have retained much of the land behind the house as he is shown as the owner in maps of 1872. By 1889 Rufus A. Chase, a descendant of Simeon Chase who lived on Colby’s Lane, owned the land and the house. The house passed into the Ramsey family in 1889, heirs of Rufus Chase (deed 2855/455).

James Davis, known as James Davis Sr. during his lifetime, was one of the founders of Haverhill, MA, a group of men who were organized by Rev. John Ward. His name appears in the records of 1650 as first appearing in 1646 with a property valuation of 200.

“We are informed by Mr. James Davis that his father Amos Davis of the East Parish owned two Negroes, named Prince and Judith, which he purchased when young in Newburyport. The bill of sale of them is still preserved in the family. Prince married a white woman, and, after securing his freedom, removed to Sanbornton, N. H., where he has descendants still living. In the 1790 census for Haverhill, MA, Amos Davis’s household includes one non-white free person and no slaves. It is listed as located near Josiah Chase which puts him up the hill from the village. In 1800 the Amos Davis household includes only free white persons. In 1800 there is also a household in Haverhill for a Prince Davis containing one adult white female and four non-white free persons. By 1810 Prince Davis is no longer listed in the Haverhill census. He probably had moved to NH by that time.

8c.Rhoda Griffin Page (1790/1792 – 1/2 sister of James Davis) The birth of Rhoda Griffin is a mystery. She was born in Haverhill, MA in Nov 1790/92 to Hannah Griffin. In 1800 Hannah married Amos Davis. The records of Rhoda’s marriage list her name as Griffin. The death certificate of one of her children in New Hampshire list her maiden name as Davis. The death of another of her children, Rebecca Ingersoll Morse gives her mother’s name as Rhoda Griffin (the child’s father is Joseph Page). Rhoda’s death certificate lists her parents as Amos Davis and Hannah Griffin. It is still unclear if Amos was actually Rhoda’s biological father or not. There is a record of a Hannah Griffin marrying Amos Childs in Bradford, MA in January 1793.
Amos and Hannah had two children together of record. The first, James, was born two years before their marriage. Hannah was born one year after their marriage. Amos was about forty years older than Hannah Griffin.
Rhoda married(2) Joseph Page (1779 – 1847) on Sept. 25, 1808 (this is strange as Amos Davis didn’t die until 1810). Rhoda and Joseph had a son Stephen Page (1810), a daughter Rebecca Ingersoll Page (b abt 1821) who married Stephen Morse, and a son Joseph who married in 1854 in Bradford. Rhoda and Joseph were listed in the 1850 census for Londonderry, NH.
Rebecca and Stephen Morse had Fannie, Hannah B, Oren and Angeline. Sons Newell, Henry, and John all died before the age of 21. Rebecca and Stephen and children are listed In 1860 and 1870 censuses for Londonderry. After her husband died, Rebecca lived with her daughter Fannie and her husband James Harris in Haverhill, MA (census for 1900, 1910). Rebecca died May 26, 1910. There is a record of Fannie marrying Samuel E Leach in 1865 in Methuen, MA.

Second m for each of them. His parents Ephraim Foot and Sarah Foot. Her parents Amos and Hannah Davis. Hannah Davis Foot died 1875 Haverhill age 74. A Hannah McFee is listed as living with John Foot in 1850 at the age of 47.
Probate #7270 is for Hannah to take guardianship of James who is 13 and Hannah who is 10, signed by John Ingersoll. Probate #7202 in 1811 for Amos Davis includes his will written in 1804. In it he leaves 1/3 of all of his real and personal estate to his wife Hannah, but also leaves several pieces of land to James and Hannah, his children. He leaves a piece of land in Plaistow to Amos Davis of Plaistow. His widow signed a statement waiving her provisions in the will and requests that a committee be formed to assess and apportion the inheritance and give her her right of dower. The committee assigns Hannah a chamber in the dwelling house along with various other rights such as use of the oven. They also give her part of all of Amos’ land holdings, probably 1/3. She is also granted 6 1/2 acres of the ‘home place’ bounded on land of Zebulon Ingersoll, Joseph Moody. Haverhill 1830 census lists a household for Mrs. Hannah Davis, with 1 female child, 1 female > 60 and one female > 70. Hannah wife of Amos, above would be 65 in 1830. Is the older female her mother or other relative? (see siblings below) Hannah Griffin Davis was born in Chester NH in 1765 of Phillip and Ruth Griffen. James and Lydia lived on the Davis family farm on Merrimac St. The 1850 Haverhill census shows the James Davis, Jr. household worth $3500. He is a farmer age 51. With him lives his wife Lydia (Morse) age 54, and his children Rebecca Ingersoll age 21, James age 19, shoemaker, Daniel Morse age 14, John age 13, and Lydia Maria age 8. Phoebe Head age 96 from NH and Jordan Getchell age 19, laborer from Maine, also live with them. Another son of Lydia and James, Amos Davis (11 SEP 1827 – Mar. 3, 1891) marries Elmira E.
