Lovejoy/Abbott Family

The Lovejoy/Abbott family are highly intertwined and mostly living in Andover.

At the age of 13, William Lovejoy Abbott (1765-1798) attends Phillips and graduated from Harvard College in 1787.  Doctor William Lovejoy Abbot was a classmate of John Quincy Adams. He was a physician in Amesbury until 1794 when he moved to Haverhill.

William Lovejoy Abbott was a young doctor in Rocks Village for just a short time. He married Abby Carr (1770 – c. 1843 H) in 1792. He purchased the Brick Store and some land in 1795 from his brother-in-law Joshua Wingate and Hannah (Carr) Wingate. They perhaps built 9 Wharf lane at this time as they sold the brick store and 2R sq of land 1797 to William Little.  They are living at 9 Wharf Lane when he died in 1798, leaving his widow, Abigail Carr Abbott, to marry the next doctor to come to down, Elias Weld.

William L. Abbott probate # 155, dated: 1798.  Abigail (Carr), his wife, gets all property, real and person.  Abigail then marries Elias Weld (1732 – aft 1822). William Lovejoy Abbott Wingate (1791 – 1817) gets 150.00 (son of Joseph Wingate/Judith Carr (Abby’s sister). To his twin sister: Hannah Halley: $20.00 Three pieces of property: Homestead and buildings 1/2 acre of land (potentially 9 Wharf Lane and 47 East Main) 12 acres of woodland and 1 acre of tillage land (down the end of wharf lane deed 159/297).

The 12 acres of tillage land was sold to John Kelly in 1801 (204/39), the 1 acres of tillage land was sold to Frederick Parker in 1800 (169/83), and the house and land at 9 Wharf lane was sold to Moses Sargent in 1800 (187/287). Abigail Carr Abbott Weld and Elias Weld lived at 29 East Main Street known as The Countess House from 1820 to 1824. They most likely lived in Amesbury on property that Elias bought from Benjamin Balch in 1799 (165/86) which contained a house and barn and 16 acres.

Sister of Judith Carr marries W. Abbott, sister of Joseph Wingate 
marries H. Ingals.  They are living next to each other in Rocks Village 
in the late 1700s (37 East Main and 29 East Main respectively)
